Locs Retwist

A Locs retwist (also called a maintenance retwist) is a grooming process for dreadlocks/ locs where the new hair growth at the roots is twisted back into the existing loc pattern. It helps keep the sections neat and defined as your hair grows.

What happens during a retwist?

  1. The hair is usually washed and conditioned.

  2. The roots are separated to maintain the original parting pattern.

  3. New growth is twisted in the same direction as the loc.

Clips or bands may be used to hold the twists in place while they dry.

Different retwist methods

Palm rolling: Rolling the loc between the palms.

Comb coils / finger twisting: Twisting the roots with fingers or a comb.

Interlocking: Pulling the loc through the root in a pattern; often lasts longer than a traditional retwist.

Crochet maintenance: Using a crochet hook to tighten loose hairs into the loc.
